In cities, we are increasingly surrounded by asphalt, concrete, and enclosed environments where we spend most of our days. It is common to think that, in order to reconnect with greenery, we need to seek nature elsewhere. However, nature can be much closer than we think and can become part of the spaces we inhabit

When nature becomes part of architecture

The sense of well-being we experience in certain environments is not accidental. Humans have a natural instinct that leads them to seek a connection with nature. This innate bond is called biophilia.

From this awareness comes biophilic design, an architectural approach that integrates plants, natural light, and organic materials into the spaces we inhabit, creating environments that are more balanced and in harmony with nature according to the principles of sustainable architecture.

The Benefits of Biophilic Design in Indoor Spaces

Integrating greenery into indoor environments has tangible effects on both mental and physical health. The presence of plants at home or in the office, along with natural light and other natural elements, positively influences our emotional state, helping to reduce stress and improve concentration.

According to the international report Human Spaces – The Global Impact of Biophilic Design in the Workplace, environments that integrate natural elements show a reduction in stress of up to 15% and an increase in productivity of 6%.

Spaces become more welcoming and harmonious, fostering a widespread sense of calm and balance. At the same time, greenery helps improve indoor air quality, making environments healthier.

In addition to its mental benefits, biophilic design also supports physical well-being, helping regulate sleep patterns, reduce fatigue, and sustain higher energy levels throughout the day, as confirmed by a study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology.

Nature has a tangible and measurable impact on our daily well-being. So why not start integrating it into the spaces where we spend most of our time?

Breathing architecture
